In late December, Veliky Novgorod in Russia was blanketed in snow. As the New Year approached, the festive atmosphere was palpable everywhere. Supermarkets were stocked with large quantities of citrus fruits from Hubei Province, China, drawing crowds of eager shoppers.

“我们在新年到来的时候，都会选择购买物美价廉的中国柑橘。”正在超市选购柑橘的当地市民玛利亚说，“除了购买新鲜的水果，橘子口味的罐头、零食也会出现在我们的购物车里。”

"When the New Year approaches, we always choose to buy affordable and high-quality Chinese citrus." said Maria, a local resident shopping at the supermarket. " Besides fresh fruit, we also love to add citrus-flavored canned goods and snacks to our carts."

红红火火的柑橘出口

The Thriving Citrus Export

得益于特殊的地理位置，湖北省的柑橘采摘期恰逢11月底到12月，皮厚肉多耐储运，刚好赶在中东欧、中亚国家的新年前上市，深受进出口商的青睐。

Thanks to its unique geographical conditions, the citrus harvest season in Hubei Province runs from late November to December. The thick-skinned, juicy fruits are durable for storage and transportation, making them ideal for export to Central and Eastern European countries, as well as Central Asia, just in time for the New Year. Importers and exporters highly favor them.

来自辽宁省葫芦岛市的货车司机穆春元和往年一样来到襄阳市南漳县巡检镇运输柑橘。“咱们货车从这里运到满洲里口岸只需要4天，到俄罗斯海参崴只需要7天，15天后就能进入莫斯科和圣彼得堡的超市了。”穆春元掰开一个柑橘对记者说，“瞧，这橘子果肉细腻，没有核，不愁卖，好吃，杠杠的！”说罢他又朝嘴里塞了一口。

Mu Chunyuan, a truck driver from Huludao City, Liaoning Province, came to Xunjian Town in Nanzhang County to transport citrus as usual. "It takes only four days to reach Manzhouli Port, seven days to Vladivostok, and 15 days to supermarkets in Moscow and St. Petersburg." Mu told journalists while peeling a citrus. "Look, it's seedless with tender flesh. It sells well and tastes great!" He took another bite.

襄峡果蔬有限公司是湖北省襄阳市一家专注柑橘出口贸易的农企，市场触及俄罗斯、哈萨克斯坦、新加坡等“一带一路”合作伙伴。记者走进企业发现，周边的农户正用一辆辆三轮车把柑橘运送到车间，堆成了一座座小山，数十名工人分成三组，忙着清洗、分拣、封装。

Xiangxia Fruit and Vegetable Co., Ltd., based in Xiangyang, Hubei Province, specializes in citrus exports to countries along the Belt and Road, including Russia, Kazakhstan, and Singapore. Upon entering the facility, journalists saw farmers delivering citrus by tricycle, forming small mountains. Dozens of workers were busy cleaning, sorting, and packaging the fruits.

“以前，我们这里的柑橘出口都是通过中间商转销，利润都被抽走了。”襄峡果蔬有限公司负责人吴明常回忆起自己当年打通出口渠道的往事说道，“2010年，我和妻子拉了一车柑橘去沈阳销售，到了以后才知道，柑橘出口的北方通道在满洲里，第二年我们就自己开着卡车拉着货直奔口岸，打通了外销渠道。”

"In the past, our citrus exports went through intermediaries, who took most of the profits." recalled Wu Mingchang, head of Xiangxia Fruit and Vegetable Co., Ltd. "In 2010, my wife and I drove a truckload of citrus to Shenyang, only to find out that the northern export route was through Manzhouli. The next year, we drove straight to the port and opened our own export channel."

没有了中间环节，当地的柑橘通关时间节省了近2天，果农们也不用被赚差价了。“瞧，这是今天圣彼得堡的柑橘价格，193卢布/公斤，行情不错。”吴明常向记者展示手机上俄罗斯客商发回的信息说，“今年咱们公司的产值有望突破4000万元！”

By cutting out the middlemen, the local citrus export process was streamlined, saving nearly two days in customs clearance and increasing farmers' profits. "Look, today's price in St. Petersburg is 193 rubles per kilogram. The market is promising." Wu said, showing journalists a message from a Russian client. "This year, our company's output value is expected to exceed 40 million yuan!"

红红火火的百姓生活

The Vibrant Life of the Ordinary People

柑橘采摘一片繁忙，这是记者来到襄阳市南漳县巡检镇最直观的印象。

The bustling citrus harvest was the first thing journalists noticed upon arriving in Xunjian Town, Nanzhang County, Hubei Province.

绵延的山坡上种满了果树，红彤彤、圆鼓鼓、沉甸甸的柑橘挂满枝头，果农们骑着三轮摩托车满载着柑橘穿行在山间小道。据了解，仅襄阳市南漳县巡检镇的柑橘种植面积就超过4.5万亩，产值约2亿元，带动周边15000人从事相关产业。

The rolling hills are covered with fruit trees, their branches heavy with bright red citrus. Farmers ride tricycles loaded with fruit along mountain trails. The town's citrus cultivation area exceeds 45,000 mu, with an annual output value of about 200 million yuan, supporting 15,000 people in related industries.

“咱们这里三面环山，日照充足、雨量充沛，特别适合柑橘生长。”正在忙着帮果农对接客商的襄阳市南漳县巡检镇峡口社区党委书记张三中对记者说，“现在本地人可不好找，你们在镇上能看见的大多是外地客商，本地的男女老少有一个算一个都在山上摘果子哩！”

"Our town is surrounded by mountains on three sides, with plenty of sunshine and rainfall, making it perfect for citrus cultivation." said Zhang Sanzhong, Party Secretary of Xiakou Community, while helping farmers connect with merchants. "It's hard to find locals in town now—they're all in the mountains picking fruit. Most people you see here are merchants from elsewhere."

果农张道民曾经因病致残，生活拮据。在当地基层党组织的帮助下，他在山坡上开辟了果园，不到10年时间，年产值就达到了22万元。“现在手头有了余钱，摘果子可以雇工了，种橘子改变了我们的生活。”张道民感慨地说。

Zhang Daomin, a fruit farmer, once struggled with poverty due to a disability caused by illness. With the help of local grassroots Party organizations, he started an orchard on the hillside. In less than a decade, his annual output value reached 220,000 yuan. "Now I have enough money to hire workers for harvesting. Growing citrus has truly changed our lives." Zhang said.

柑橘产业的影响力越来越大，当地外出务工的年轻人也回来了。

The growing citrus industry has also attracted young people back to their hometowns.

“刚开始种果树的时候，我什么都不懂，就请教周围的果农，政府也会定期派科技人员下乡指导，不到3年时间，果园一年的毛收入就有30多万元。”张威武对记者说，2013年，还在深圳某半导体公司当“白领”的张威武看到柑橘产业商机，返乡当起了“果农”。“看到柑橘种植大有可为，我又承包了第二个果园，面积达到100多亩，年产值70多万元。”张威武开心地说。

"When I first started planting, I knew nothing. I learned from other farmers, and the government sent experts to guide us. In less than three years, my orchard's gross income exceeded 300,000 yuan." said Zhang Weiwu, who left his job at a semiconductor company in Shenzhen in 2013 to return home and become a citrus farmer. "Seeing the potential, I leased another orchard, now over 100 mu, with an annual output value of over 700,000 yuan."Zhang Weiwu said.

柑橘产业不仅鼓起果农们的荷包，也带动了当地农旅产业。

The citrus industry has not only enriched farmers but also boosted local agricultural tourism.

“巡检镇现有30多家农家乐、12家宾馆，每年接待游客超过5万人次，旅游综合收入达5000多万元。”襄阳市南漳县巡检镇党委书记祝佩强说，“柑橘产业发展红红火火，最受益的还是咱们的老百姓！”

"Our town now has over 30 rural homestays and 12 hotels, welcoming more than 50,000 tourists annually and generating over 50 million yuan in tourism revenue." said Zhu Peiqiang, Party Secretary of Xunjian Town. "The success of the citrus industry has brought real benefits to our people."
